Foundational enablers for change
A word on technology and culture
As I’ll discuss later in this section, agile transformation is people first, technology second. But that shouldn’t diminish the significance of data and technology as enablers and catalysts for agility and change. Many organizations have made large investments now in technology systems that can take capability to a whole new level, but it remains for most a work in progress. Businesses need to think about their technology stacks and strategy not only in terms of the capabilities that they need now, but also those that they might need in the future. Technology architecture and procurement processes need to take greater account of flexibility, scalability and simplification to reduce complexity and future-proof their infrastructure. Organizations also need to develop forward-thinking data strategies alongside their investment in systems and resourcing. It’s easy to get excited about the possibilities of so-called big data, algorithms, automation and machine learning, but if our data isn’t structured, made available or interpreted in the right way, we will never realize the full potential. Alongside data and technology, we should also consider culture as a key enabler. The wrong culture can kill agile transformation before it has even started. But the right behaviours can catalyse lasting change.
This book is not designed to set out templates for technology architectures or data strategies, but whilst it’s important to acknowledge the importance of these fundamental enablers, it’s also key to understand the elemental role that people and culture play in actually creating the opportunity for real change to happen.
